Living with the name Rhys

Rhys looks like a puzzle to anyone who has never been to Wales. The h is silent, the y sounds like ee, and the whole thing rhymes with peace. Expect to spell it on every phone call, and expect a few birthday cards addressed to Reese or Reece. Some people will read it as Rice on the first try. That is the main cost of this name in the United States, and it never fully goes away.

Most sources trace it to the Old Welsh Ris, probably meaning ardor or enthusiasm. Welsh princes carried it, including Rhys ap Gruffydd, who ruled much of south Wales in the twelfth century. Surnames like Price, Preece and Rees grew out of ap Rhys, son of Rhys. So the name hides in plenty of family trees that never set foot in Wales.

Once people learn it, Rhys is easy to live with. One syllable, a soft start and a hiss at the end. It sounds trim on a baby and still fits a man of sixty. With a long surname, say Rhys Abernathy, it gives the full name a clean front door. With a short one it can feel clipped, so a longer middle name helps. There is no real nickname, which some families count as a bonus.

Things to consider

  • Reese is on many baby lists for both girls and boys. A Rhys and a Reese in one class will sound identical at roll call. If you also like Reese for a sibling, think twice. Two kids with names that sound the same will cause chaos at home.
  • Welsh relatives may say it a little differently from you. In North Wales the vowel is shorter than in the south, and both versions are correct. Nobody in Wales will think you got it wrong if you say plain REES.
  • Picture ordering a pizza under this name. If hearing it spelled back as R-E-E-S-E makes you laugh instead of sigh, you are ready. Teachers, coaches and doctors' offices will need the same correction, so practice a short, cheerful way to spell it.

Questions parents ask about Rhys

Why is Rhys spelled with an h and a y?

In Welsh, rh is its own sound, an r with a small puff of breath. The y here stands for the vowel English speakers hear as ee. English speakers drop the breath and just say REES, and the old Welsh spelling stays on paper. The circumflex in Rhŷs marks a long vowel, but most families skip it on American paperwork, where accent marks often get dropped anyway.

Is the surname Price related to Rhys?

Yes. Welsh naming used ap, meaning son of, so ap Rhys slowly became Price, Preece and Prys. Rees and Rice are other surname forms. If Price is a family surname, Rhys is a neat way to point back to it. Price is not the only one. Bevan comes from ap Evan and Bowen from ap Owen in the same way, if you enjoy that kind of family history.

Should I pick Rhys or Reece for a boy in America?

Reece is easier to spell on sight and will need fewer corrections. Rhys keeps the Welsh look and the link to Welsh history. Families with Welsh roots usually go with Rhys, and others tend to choose by how much spelling-out they can stand. Both are said the same way, so the choice is really about what you want people to see when they read it on a cake or a jersey.
