My notebook of playground names has a pattern I did not plan. The parents who love old armchairs tend to love old names. The ones with bare counters and one good knife tend to pick names with one syllable. Taste in names often lives right next to taste in everything else.

What this quiz does

The ten questions skip names entirely. They ask about your living room, your jacket, your car radio and how you feel about family traditions. Your answers point to one of six name styles: vintage, nature, literary, modern, short and sleek, or classic. Each style comes with one name that shows it well, so you have a real example to say out loud.

What it cannot do

It cannot hear your last name, and that matters more than style. It also has no idea what your partner likes, or which names you have already crossed off because of an ex or a difficult coworker. A quiz sorts taste. It cannot pick a name for you.

Something worth trying this week

Once you know your style, borrow a trick from coffee shops. Order under the name you are thinking about, three or four times, at different places. Listen to how the barista says it back. Look at how it gets written on the cup. You will learn fast whether people hear it right or ask you to repeat it. You will also find out if you like it called across a noisy room.

Then try the long version. Say the first name, the middle name and the surname together, quickly, the way you will say it when someone is about to touch a hot stove. Some lovely names fall apart at that speed.

Before you start

Go with your first instinct on each question. If two answers both feel true, pick the one you would choose on a tired Tuesday, not the one you would pin to a mood board. Your everyday self is the one who will say this name a thousand times.
