When we were naming our second child, my husband and I agreed on almost everything except the name. His list leaned toward his grandfather. Mine leaned toward anything nobody in either family had used. We were both right, which made it harder.

This quiz is about that part: the people around the name. It asks how your house sounds on a weeknight and how much spelling you can stand. It also asks what happens when a relative frowns, and whether a shared name in class would bother you. Your answers land on one of six names, each standing for a different family vibe, from the easy favorite to the grand rarity nobody else will have.

A short list of questions cannot know your family, though. It has never met your mother-in-law. It does not know about the cousin who already used your favorite, or the Welsh great-grandmother whose name you have been saving. Take the result as a nudge toward a type of name, then look at the others near it.

Here is the thing that saved us. We each wrote ten names on separate pieces of paper, without talking. Then we swapped lists and each crossed off any we could not live with, no reasons needed. What survived was short, and it was shared.

We argued about four names instead of forty.

A second tip, from many friends who learned it the hard way: think about when you tell relatives. Once the name is on the birth certificate, most people keep quiet and start using it. Before the birth, a lot of people feel free to vote. If your family has strong opinions, you may want to keep the finalists to yourselves until the baby is here.

Answer for the family you have now; your weeknights matter more than your holiday photos.
